The Black Environmental Collective is a Black-led non-profit organization that promotes environmental justice and sustainability within Black communities. Its mission is to address the intersectionality of environmental issues and racial inequality, advocating for policies and practices that prioritize Black individuals’ and communities’ health and well-being. They came to us for a rebrand with a goal to create a brand identity that focuses on empowering and uplifting black voices in the environmental movement. Including raising awareness about environmental issues that disproportionately affect black communities.

I was commissioned by the Black Environmental Collective to transform, and expand their previous brand identity from something that was unorganized and local, to something that will stand out across the nonprofit sector of environmental injustice. The people of Pittsburgh are a very proud people, and the previous logo for the Black Environmental Collective showed that with images of a golden bridge, a river, and of course the beautiful Pittsburgh skyline. It was too complex and niche. The client wanted a branding identity that would stretch past the borders of Pittsburgh and western Pennsylvania.

We created symbols to represent causes that an organization like BEC would create awareness and organize around. These symbols can be used solo icons, or bullet points. A pattern was also created, made up of deconstructed icons. The pattern can be used for merchandise and marketing.

To complete the brand, we created two color palettes: one monochromatic with soft greens and browns for the environment and one with bright and bold colors to represent the vibrancy of black culture. These colors can be used all together or within their assigned color palette.
